The Strußnigteich is a pond up to 26 hectares in the municipality of Feldkirchen in Carinthia and is used for carp breeding. It is privately owned and is not accessible.

description

The pond was probably created in the 18th century when a wet area was dammed. It is a maximum of 26 hectares and an average of 1.7 m deep. The greatest depth is 7.8 m. In addition to carp, there are also tench, pike, perch, crucian carp, pikeperch, grass carp and silver carp in the pond. At the beginning of the 1990s, the pseudorasbora parva was introduced from the Danube delta.

The hills around the pond are surrounded by cultivated areas, in addition to fields and meadows, also spruce monocultures. At the eastern edge of the pond there is an extensive thicket of reeds.

A myriad of small animals such as dragonflies and butterflies live on the edges . The species of tufted duck , pochard , lapwing and little ringed plover , which are rare for Carinthia , should be mentioned among breeding birds . The pond is of particular importance as a resting place for migratory birds , because such habitats are rare in Central Carinthia .

Protected areas

The Strußnigteich was placed under nature protection in 1979 (LGBl. 103/1979). The nature reserve Strußnig-Teich covers 375 hectares in the communities of Feldkirchen and Moosburg . In the same year a strip around the nature reserve was placed under landscape protection (LGBl. 100/1979). The Strußnigteich landscape protection area covers 166 hectares in the two municipalities mentioned.
