Stuart Davis (painter)
Stuart Davis (born December 7, 1894 in Philadelphia - † June 24, 1964 ) was an American painter .
His main work can be assigned to Cubism and Pop Art . At the beginning of his career he painted figurative in the style of the Ashcan School (he learned from Robert Henri ), afterwards he worked intensively on landscape painting in the style of Vincent van Gogh .
In 1913 he exhibited as one of the youngest painters on the Armory Show .
By placing the names and packaging of consumer products in the spotlight on paintings from the 1920s (e.g. Lucky Strike, Odol), he was already using elements that characterized Pop Art in the 1960s.
In 1956 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
