Stuart Craig Rachels (born September 26, 1969 in New York City ) is an American philosopher and chess player . He came in at the 1989 chess championship in the USA on a shared 1st place and has the title of International Master .

Life

Stuart Rachels is the second-born son of the philosopher James Rachel . He grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and learned to play chess from his older brother at the age of 8. At the age of 11 years, 10 months and 13 days he was the youngest player to achieve the title of national champion . At the age of 12 he won the US Junior Open in 1982 , shared with David Gertler . He was trained by the international master Boris Kogan . In 1984 and 1985 Rachel took part in the youth world championships for the age group under 16 years and came in each shared 5th place. At the Junior World Championship in 1988 he came in 16th.

By winning the US Junior Championship in 1988 he qualified for the national championship in 1989. As an outsider with the lowest rating of all participants, he remained undefeated and scored 9.5 points from 15 games. This brought him to 1st place, which was shared with Yasser Seirawan and Roman Dzindzichashvili . Through this success he qualified for the Interzonal Manila 1990 , where he finished 46th with 6 points from 13 games. At the national championship in 1990, which was played in the knockout system , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Nick de Firmian . He last took part in the state championship in 1992 and came 13th with 6.5 points from 15 games.

In 1993 he ended his active chess career to devote himself entirely to his university studies. Since then, his rating has remained unchanged at 2485, which is also the highest rating he has achieved.

He first studied at Emory University and the University of Oxford . His Ph.D. in philosophy from Syracuse University in 1998 . He is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama specializing in moral philosophy . In terms of content, he ties in with the scientific work of his father and has published several of his works in new editions.

In October 2009, he married Heather Elliot, a law scholar at the University of Alabama.
