James Rachel's
James Rachels (born May 30, 1941 in Columbus , Georgia , † September 5, 2003 in Birmingham , Alabama ) was an American moral philosopher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham .
His positions included a moral commitment to vegetarianism and an animal rights position , affirmative action , active euthanasia, and the notion that parents cannot justify giving preference to their own children over other children when making trade-offs. Metaethically , Rachel described his position as "preferential utilitarian" .
