Student march

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The student march is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 56). The work was performed for the first time on June 3, 1848 in front of the university (today Universitätsplatz) in Vienna.

Remarks

The march was written against the backdrop of the revolution of 1848 . In contrast to his father , the young Strauss sympathized with the revolutionary movement. For this reason he composed the Victory March of the Revolution , which was soon given the name Revolution March . In addition, at the request of the revolting students, Johann Strauss set the so-called freedom song by Dr. JH Hirschfeld under the title Student March . The text was revolutionary for the time. The march was the composer's most active contribution to the revolution of 1848. The original version of the work has been lost. Only one version for military bands remained, which served as the basis for the CD recording mentioned below. Incidentally, at that time Johann Strauss (son) expressed his sympathy for the revolution with several works. But he was not an active participant in revolutionary acts. After the failure of the movement, he did everything in his power to forget his earlier attitude towards the revolution. This earned him the title of Court Ball Music Director in 1863 . The student march , however, was apparently not classified as that revolutionary after the revolution. In 1849, after the revolution was put down, the printing of the piano reduction was approved by the government without hesitation.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is exactly 2 minutes. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
