Studernheim (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Studernheim is a complete Ortswüstung in the settlement Hammerau within the boundaries of the hamlet , a district of the district town Sinsheim in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

The origin of the settlement of this place is obscure, but the location of the desert in the cleared valley of the Ilvesbach corresponds to the Franconian settlement scheme of the entire Kraichgau and the fertile loess soil may also have contributed to the settlement. The place is first mentioned in 1369 in the Palatinate Interest Register . According to the taxes listed, at least one farm existed in Studernheim at that time. In later mentions only taxes from meadows and the like are mentioned. From the context of the mention in the description of the Hilsbach official winery from 1670, it can be concluded that the place called Staudern no longer existed at that time. In the 18th century, the abandoned place was also called Staudern , Stautenheim , Staudenheim and Staudernheim , and in the 19th century the name Staudern became established, which today still bears the parcel at the site of the abandoned settlement.

Historical traces of settlement have been found in the entire clearing lane around the Hammerau settlement, which was laid out in the 1960s . In the meadows northeast of the settlement there were ceramic and brick fragments as well as walls and other hall relics. The Studernheim settlement is likely to have been in this area. To the southwest of the Hammerau, ground plan-like shadow features in the ground give indications of further possible traces of settlement. In the forest north of the connecting road from Birkenauerhof to Hammerau there are hills and the remains of a brick meadow drainage, which are also related to the Studernheim settlement.

The relics found show that the site was settled in the late Middle Ages, from around the 13th to the 15th century. Later relics such as irrigation systems only point to the cultivation of the corridors until the beginning of the 19th century. The reasons for the abandonment of the place are unknown, but the late medieval time of the abandonment falls in a period of desolation that spanned all of Europe. Possible causes for the abandonment of the place are the concentration of settlements in the late Middle Ages, the expansion of the landlord's own economy or epidemics.
