Stuhm is the name of a Polish family that was ennobled by the Prussian king in the 16th century. In addition to their ancestral name Manikowski , they carried the nobility name Count von Stuhm after the Stuhm castle of the same name in the Pomeranian Voivodeship .

history

From 1466 to 1772 Stuhm belonged to the Prussian royal share . In the fight against Moscow and the Tatars in Podolia , the brothers Zacharias and Theodore Manikowski received an award on June 8, 1593 for their bravery and merits. They were raised to the Polish nobility . Then they returned to Stuhm. Due to the unrest of the war between the Republic of Poland-Lithuania and the Kingdom of Sweden , they came into possession of Stuhm Castle, the exact circumstances can no longer be determined. After attaining the castle, they dropped their names as identification with the county on it. They called themselves Zacharias and Theodore Grafen von Stuhm. Shortly before the Treaty of Stuhmsdorf , where the armistice between the two countries was sealed, Zacharias Graf von Stuhm died in an assassination attempt. Theodore was now the sole Count of Stuhm. Theodor August Michael, the descendant of Theodore, died in 1683 in a fire in which most of the Stuhms burned down. Since he had no descendants of his own, the inheritance passed to his cousin Antonius Manikowski after Theodor's death. Bartalomäus Theodor August von Stuhm was the last count of the county, which existed until 1772, when it went to the Kingdom of Prussia after the First Partition of Poland . There were seven counts in total in the 170-year-old county. The name Manikowski has always been used on the side. The family line has continued to this day, although the name was changed to Mankowski during the First World War .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the Count von Stuhm family shows St. Mary, which in this case symbolizes the Christian influence of the Teutonic Order , just like the three crosses on the right side of the shield. These are also to be added to the order. The feathers above the crown are taken from the old Manikowskis coat of arms, as well as the red and white decoration on the edges.
