Stunt rigging

Stunt rigging is the planning and operation of rope systems for dramaturgical exaggeration (assertion) of a movement.

Stunt rigging is the art of depicting people flying through the air, being dragged across the ground, floating in space, flying like Superman, hitting obstacles without injuries or showing superhuman strength.

It enables the safe execution of dynamic movements that seem dangerous, impossible or magical.

Stunt rigging is a compilation of wireline techniques unterschiedlichster disciplines such as tree-climbing technology (IDT) , event rigging , industrial climbing , rock climbing , circus , mountain climbing , potholing and sailing .

Stunt rigging is not regulated by specific standards, but rather includes the knowledge and safe use of equipment, techniques and skills from all rope engineering industries, which are combined to achieve certain artistic or acrobatic effects.

Areas of application

Stunt rigging is mainly used in film productions, television productions, theater productions and commercial film productions.

There is a strong relationship to aerial rigging ( theater , circus and shows ), subordinate to fun sports ( bungee jumping , house running ).

Move, hang or are secured on or in stunt rigging systems: stunt man , stunt double for action sequences, actors, performers, model for play scenes.

Head stunt rigger

  • the are stunt coordinator assumed
  • supervise the assembly and operation of rigging equipment and flight systems
  • commission the maintenance and inspection of rigging systems, devices, airframes, fall protection or carry them out themselves
  • plan and coordinate rescue measures for the stunt rigging department
  • are jointly responsible for the planning of labor, personnel and material costs in the stunt rigging department
  • prepare and review risk assessments for the stunt trigging department


Stunt rigger

  • are subordinate to the stunt coordinator and work under the supervision of the head stunt rigger
  • are responsible for the operation of the rigging equipment and flight systems during stunts and stunt rehearsals and ensure that they are in perfect working order
  • participate in inspections and maintenance of the rigging equipment and filling in the necessary documentation
  • are responsible for compliance with guidelines and procedures relating to health and safety and for the use of technical equipment in the stunt rigging trade

Head stunt riggers and stunt riggers are organized in the Federal Republic of Germany in the German Stunt Association eV .
