The styloglossus muscle is a skeletal muscle and is one of the outer muscles of the tongue . It arises from the styloid process of the temporal bone and the stylomandibular ligament , in animals from the stylohyoid of the hyoid bone . It pulls towards the tongue and pushes itself between the inner and outer carotid arteries . The muscle radiates into the tongue in a fan shape. It is supplied by the lingual artery .
He pulls the tongue backwards, with one-sided contraction he moves the tip of the tongue to the side. In interaction with the other muscles, it is important for swallowing , speaking and sucking . The tongue muscles form the tongue sounds ( linguals ).
