The Turkwel is a river that flows from Mount Elgon on the Kenyan - Ugandan border to Lake Turkana . From its source to the border of the West Pokot District it is called Suam . The name is derived from the word Tirkol from the Turkana language , which means "river rich in fish". At the beginning of the 1990s, the Turkwel dam and a controversial hydropower plant were built with support from France . Due to the fluctuating amount of water, little electricity is produced.
