In the geosciences, processes or formations on the earth's surface that occur in the open air are referred to as subaeric (Greek under the air ) or subaeric .

In volcanology , for example, subaeric lava flows are distinguished from those that emerge underwater ( subaquatic ) or under glaciers ( subglacial ). You have e.g. B. a different flow behavior and oxidize mostly reddish.

When volcanic ash is ejected into the air, it is initially loosely deposited, but is affected by wind and slope . Under water (submarine), however, it condenses with the sea sediment to form a tuffite-like rock.
