SubEthaEdit is a free text editor for macOS that enables collaborative writing .
Functions
SubEthaEdit offers developers useful functions such as syntax highlighting , search / replace with regular expressions , navigation in text using symbols, automatic indenting, automatic completion and Unicode . The basic version supports over 27 languages; others are made available by the open source community. The editor works together with numerous programs via interfaces, e.g. for file transfer (including various FTP programs) and thus enables easy editing of files that are placed on servers .
By using the Bonjour protocol, SubEthaEdit recognizes all users in the local subnet and can thus be used without any configuration. To work together, you can either share a local document or invite other available users to a local document using drag and drop . The individual text of each user is marked in color. So you can see immediately who wrote what. There is no technical restriction on the number of users who can work on a document at the same time.
License
SubEthaEdit was free up to version 2.3 for non-commercial users. The versions 2.3 - 4.1 were only commercially available. In November 2018, SubEthaEdit was released as free software under the MIT license .
history
The name goes back to the Sub-Etha communication network from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series.
The program won the 2003 Apple Design Award and the Mac OS X Innovators Award .
