A subscript (also subscript of Engl. Subscript ) is a number , a letter or other character that is written below the normal print line. Subscriptions are often used in formulas, mathematical expressions, or sum formulas of molecules . The sum formula of water is generally known : H 2 O. Typographically, subscripts are marked with a deeper baseline and a smaller font size than the rest of the text. In the example of the empirical formula of water above, the number two should be about two-thirds the size of the H and the O. Most word processing programs do this automatically.

- In HTML and WikiSyntax , subscript text is created using the
<sub>and tags</sub>;<sub>Tief</sub>results in low . - In TeX ' math mode, also used in MediaWiki , subscripts are created using an underscore (_):
$X_{ab}$results . - In TeX ' text mode, subscripts are created with the command
\textsubscript{}.
use
- In chemical empirical formulas , e.g. B. of sulfuric acid H 2 SO 4 , the number of atoms contained in a compound is represented by subscript.
- In mathematical formulas, indices are subscripted, e.g. B.
- Subscripts also occur with physical constants , this is the absolute zero point .
