Superfamily : Succineoid
Family : Succineidae
Subfamily : Succineinae
Genre : Succinea
Scientific name
Succinea
Draparnaud , 1801

Succinea is a very species-richgenus of the amber snail family(Succineidae) from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The pointed egg-shaped cases of the representatives of the genus Succinea are medium to large in size. No more than 3.5 arched turns are formed, which increase very quickly. The ornamentation of the postembryonic convolutions consists of fine radial striae. A spindle lamella is missing or poorly developed.

In the reproductive system, the spermatic duct is thin and usually short. The penis is a simple tube or divided into a front and a back part, rarely an intermediate part is still present. Two thirds of the length of the penis is surrounded by a penis sheath. there is no muscular collar in the lower part of the vagina. The vagina is very short to long. Accordingly, the free fallopian tube is also very short to very long. The seminal vesicle (spermathek) is usually rounded with a long, thin stem.

Geographical distribution

The genus Succinea is distributed almost worldwide. In Central Europe there is only one species of the genus, the common amber snail ( Succinea putris ).

Succinea and Leucochloridium paradoxum

An amber snail infected with the parasite Leucochloridium paradoxum

Snails of the genus Succinea can be attacked by the parasitic suction worm Leucochloridium paradoxum , whose eggs are ingested by the snail in bird droppings. The parasite develops in the snail's body and its brood sacs migrate to the snail's antennae, where they give it the appearance of a thick, colorfully banded and pulsating maggot. This attracts birds that eat the supposed “maggot”, whereby the snail dies. The flukes multiply in the bird into adults that lay eggs and the life cycle of the parasite begins again.

Taxonomy and systematics

The taxon was established in 1801 by Jacques Philippe Raymond Draparnaud . Type species is Helix succinea Müller, 1774 through absolute tautonomy . The scope of the genus is completely unclear as there is no recent revision of the genus. Schileyko (2007) treats only genera (and subgenera) in his "Treatise on Recent Terrestrial Pulmonate Molluscs". He divides the genus Succinea into seven sub-genera. A number of (sub) genera are treated as synonyms, for example Truella Pease, 1871, Austrosuccinea Iredale, 1937, Arbocinea Iredale, 1937, Austrosuccinea (Cerinasota) Iredale, 1939, Papusuccinea Iredale, 1941 and Succinea (Spirancinea) Iredale, 1945 Six genera are objective synonyms of Succinea Draparnaud, 1801, as they are based on the same type species as Succinea , Helix succinea Müller, 1774: Lucena Oken, 1815, Tapada Studer, 1820, Cochlohydra Férussac, 1821, Amphibina Hartmann, 1821, Neritostoma Klein in Mörch, 1864 and Succinastrum Mabille, 1870.

In total, the genus Succinea contains over 160 species. Most species, however, are poorly known and are based only on housing morphological characteristics. How many of the listed types of these are ultimately valid is completely uncertain. The list is incomplete. The fossil species are almost completely absent so far.

The genus Succinea Draparnaud, 1801 is the type genus of the family Succineidae (and the superfamily Succineoidea and the subfamily Succineinae).
