Searchlights are headlights equipped with particularly bright lamps that are used in civil and military applications.

The civil use of searchlights usually takes place at customs or the coast guard , where they are used to track down z. B. be used by smugglers or people in distress .

In the military sector , searchlights are mainly used by artillery and navy as an effective means of tracking down enemy aircraft or airships . They are mostly linked to the flak units. Conversely, some military aircraft have or had searchlights, e.g. B. to be able to see (and attack) submarines that have surfaced at dusk or in the dark, see Leigh light and Turbinlite .

On motor vehicles searchlight are pivotally mounted so that objects can be searched as illuminated, for example, house numbers or signs that are not detected by the light of the fixed headlight. Searchlights may only be used temporarily on motor vehicles and not for permanent illumination of the road. The electrical power is limited to 35 W in Germany. In addition, when the searchlight is in operation, the tail lights and license plate lights must be switched on.
