The brewhouse in Kempten (2011)

The brewhouse was built in neo-baroque forms production facility in Kempten (Allgäu) from the year 1904. It was the main and production building and the machine hall of the Civil brewery, later adding one advertising icon of the Allgäu brewery , which the Dr. August Oetker KG . The brewhouse was given its last appearance by the internationally renowned architect Caesar Pinnau in 1977/78. Because the brewery site, which was closed in 2004, was lying fallow, it was demolished in April 2013 and is to be rebuilt at different locations. The Allgäu brewery is the owner of the land's landmark.

The owner of the building, which defines the cityscape, was the brewery owner August Weixler. The previous address was Kellerstrasse 7-8. Different extensions were added over the years; the eastern and western have now been removed. The basic design drew the baroque styles of the Kornhaus again.

In 1977 the brewhouse received its last appearance as part of a complete renovation. The owner Rudolf-August Oetker of the Allgäuer Brauhaus Aktiengesellschaft placed the order with his “house architect” Cäsar Pinnau.

Pinnau had the oculi on the top row of windows closed, the plaster smoothed and the ornaments removed from them. The most important element of the redesign were the window frames and corner blocks in baroque shapes. These forms were applied by a Munich painter and are very similar to those of the prince abbot's residence .

The adjacent buildings were demolished in early April 2013.
The brewhouse followed a few days later.

The closure of the brewery site in 2004 resulted in urban redevelopment plans. There were investors who wanted to integrate the brewhouse into the new area with commercial, office, leisure and residential space. According to other plans, the building should be demolished without replacement or rebuilt four meters apart. An urban development contract with the investor is supposed to guarantee the existence of the brewhouse; after the demolition it can be rebuilt a maximum of four meters further south.

At the beginning of April 2013, the demolition work on the adjacent buildings began and was completed within a few days. In 2014, the clients and investors announced the drafts for the brewhouse: There are two facades that look like the old brewhouse and two modern, contemporary facades that have nothing in common with the old architectural style with volutes and baroque elements. This plan is criticized by parts of the city council and in the population, who clearly spoke out against the demolition of the old brewhouse.

description

The free-standing, four-story brewhouse had a gable roof with a tail gable and volutes . In the north and south there were bay windows with a painted balcony parapet. The window frames and corner blocks were painted and kept in beige and ocher colors. The windows were asymmetrically divided and dimensioned differently.

meaning

Up to the present day, the Allgäu brewery used the brewhouse to advertise its brewery products, making the building known throughout Germany. It was considered to be a striking urban structure that increased its value through the redesign by Pinnau. The original interior design elements have no longer been preserved due to repeated technical modifications (including 1949). The population of Kempten identified their hometown with the building and most of them regretted the demolition.
