The Allgäuer Brauhaus AG is a beer brewery belonging to the Radeberger Group with headquarters and origins in Kempten (Allgäu) . The company brews a wide range of around 20 different beers. The brewery is located in Leuterschach , a district of Marktoberdorf . The brewery supplies the Allgäu Festival Week .

history

The Allgäu brewery is the result of the process of concentration on a larger brewery that began in Kempten in 1888. This process was determined by the Kempten Aktienbrauerei , the Bürgerliche Brauhaus (founded in 1899 by August and Robert Weixler) and the Grünbaumbrauerei (August Schnitzer). Before that, the cityscape was characterized by numerous smaller breweries. The Allgäuer Brauhaus was founded by the Weixler family on January 28, 1911, and the Green Tree (Schnitzer family) was added at the end of the year. In addition to breweries from the old town, the Kempten Abbey Brewery, which dates back to 1394 and whose tradition the Allgäu brewery refers to, was taken over in 1921. "The founders wanted their company to be understood as a collecting basin for Allgäu and Swabian beer interests and have clearly expressed this with the company name."

After the death of August Weixler jun. in 1920, when Robert Weixler withdrew from the business and August Schnitzer senior died. in 1925, Kommerzienrat Hans Schnitzer (1878–1964) took over the helm of the brewery. During his time in 1937 the Aulendorf brewery and other small breweries were taken over. Richard Hartle from Brauhaus Aulendorf had 1901 Teutsch Pils introduced a Pils . His beer was shipped to other continents on steamships and tapped on overseas ships and in zeppelins. Production in Aulendorf continued until 1965 and then relocated to Kempten.

After the end of the Second World War, the Allgäu brewery incorporated the four remaining breweries in Kempten. On October 1, 1967, the Mainz Aktien-Bierbrauerei acquired a majority stake (55%) in Allgäuer Brauhaus AG from the founding families Weixler and Schnitzer. The process of concentration continued: 1971 takeover of the Bayrischer Hof Kempten brewery, 1970 merger of Jedelhauser Kleinkötz and sonnenäu Schongau, 1972 merger of Schlossbrauerei Ichenhausen and Kleinkötz, 1973 takeover of Waldburg-Bräu Waldsee, 1981 takeover of the brewery by the city of Hamburg Kempten, 1989 takeover of Kaiserbräu Immenstadt, 1994 Takeover of the Ottobeuren deer brewery.

In 1994, the Allgäu brewery looked after around 800 restaurants, 120 of which were in Kempten, including the Zum Stift brewery restaurant . In 1995 the brewery took part in the promotional campaign “Dosenfreies Allgäu”, but could not prevent the proportion of canned beer in the Allgäu from reaching almost 10%. In 2003 the Kemptener brewery took over the Sailerbräu Franz Sailer KG from Marktoberdorf . Since the same year, the Allgäuer Brauhaus has been 90.3 percent owned by the Radeberger Group via RB Brauholding and thus to the Dr. August Oetker KG .

In 2004 beer brewing in Kempten was given up and production was relocated to Leuterschach . For this, 8 million euros were invested in the new brewery in Leuterschach. Harald Platz moved to the Supervisory Board on October 1, 2005, and Heinz Christ became the new Management Board member. In 2008, the company looked after 2,800 catering and retail customers. The Allgäuer Brauhaus is involved in events, customs and consumer campaigns in the region. One of the figureheads is the historic six-man train. In order to increase the utilization of the filling capacities, the Allgäuer Brauhaus is a contract filler for swing top bottles for a sister brewery within the Radeberger Group . At the DLG award in January 2010, four gold medals were awarded for the varieties Teutsch Pils , Alt Kemptener Weisse , Fürstabt Hefeweizen , Fürstabt Hefeweizen Leicht and Altenmünster Brewer beer with a rustic and spicy flavor . In 2008 the brewery generated a profit of 173,000 euros, with a turnover of 22.1 million euros with 137 employees. In 2011, sales were 20.3 million euros and profits 3820 euros, generated by 114 employees.

Historic brewery grounds

In 1921, the Allgäu brewery acquired the former monastery malt house, and in 1954 the building was closed as a malt house.

In 1904 the brewhouse was built on the brewery premises in downtown Kempten . The building, which is not a listed building, was restored in 1978 by the well-known Hamburg architect Caesar Pinnau and the painter Paul Mariel . During the restoration, the two professors based themselves on the beige-ocher-colored painting of the residence and the granary .

In the years 1925 to 1926, a bottling hall for the Allgäu brewery was built on Königstraße according to the plans of the Heydecker brothers . The hall is now a listed building. It is to be renovated and converted into a restaurant.

On the former brewery site in Kempten (16,000 m²), which was closed in 2004, inner-city living and commercial space is to be created. Gastronomy is to be created in the listed barrel hall. The historic brewhouse was demolished in April 2013 and is to be rebuilt in a shifted manner. The demolition is particularly controversial among the population of Kempten, because the brewhouse was a symbol of the brewing tradition and it was also seen as a defining feature of the cityscape. The brewhouse was a strong advertising medium for the brewery for decades.
