The Sudley House in Mossley Hill Road in Aigsburth, Liverpool ( United Kingdom ), was built Robinson in the early 19th century by the wealthy grain merchant Nicholas. Neither the year in which construction work started nor the architect who carried out the work are known, but the architectural style points to the work of Thomas Harrison , who designed the plans for numerous buildings in this style in the Liverpool area between 1811 and 1815. Robinson moved into the house in 1823 and the building was finally completed the following year. The building is set in a spacious green area with a view of the River Mersey. Robinson was appointed Mayor of Liverpool from 1828-29 and lived in Sudley House until his death in 1854. After him, his two daughters lived in the house until their death in 1883.

The property went to the shipowner and merchant George Holt in 1883. In 1944 his daughter Emma donated Sudley House to the City of Liverpool. Today the property serves as an art museum under the management of the National Museums Liverpool . It houses the collection of George Holt, who u. a. Includes work by Thomas Gainsborough , Joshua Reynolds , Edwin Landseer , John Everett Millais, and JMW Turner . After a two-year renovation phase and an investment of GBP 1 million in the furniture alone, the museum reopened on May 26, 2007. The museum building is a listed building and is listed as a building of outstanding architectural and historical interest in Category II (Grade II) of the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest .

Structural changes

George Holt had made numerous structural changes to the building after the acquisition. So he moved the main entrance from the east side to the north side of the building and built a new veranda on the east side. The west wing was expanded and u. a. supplemented by a tower. Many of these changes that have been made since the 1880s can still be seen today. The fireplaces, the antique wallpaper, the oak paneling are well preserved. The marble chimney in the dining room still bears the Holt family coat of arms. Sudley House is one of the few houses that has been so extensively preserved in the Victorian style. It is also the only existing art collection of a merchant from the Victorian era whose works of art are still on display in the place where their collector had them installed.
