Sugar (That Sugar Baby O 'Mine) is a song written by Maceo Pinkard , Edna Alexander, and Sidney Mitchell and published in 1927.

Background and first recordings

Maceo Pinkard wrote the song Sugar with his wife Edna Alexander and songwriter Sidney Mitchell; Ethel Waters recorded the song on February 20, 1926 for Columbia , with Pinkard accompanying her on piano. The Paul Whiteman Orchestra hit the US charts with Sugar in 1928 (# 19). Other musicians who covered the song from 1926 included Adrian Rollini , Louis Armstrong , Earl Hines , Fats Waller , Bing Crosby , Benny Goodman , Count Basie and Fletcher Henderson .

Later cover versions

Of the numerous cover versions of the song, the recordings of the Benny Goodman Quartet, Billie Holiday , Peggy Lee , Jo Stafford , Stanley Turrentine and Teddy Wilson are to be highlighted. Vic Damone hit the US charts with Sugar in 1953 (# 13). Gene Krupa recorded a version arranged by Gerry Mulligan . Sugar was used as an instrumental number in the 1940 film Second Chorus (directed by HC Potter ) and later in films such as Pete Kelly's Blues (1955, sung by Peggy Lee, accompanied by Matty Matlock 's Dixielanders), in the Woody Allen comedy Stardust Memories (1980), Gorillas in the Mist (1988) and Capote (2005).
