Suidheachan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suidheachan is a villa on the Scottish Hebridean island of Barra . In 1983, Suidheachan was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

The building is located on the fertile Machair at the beginning of the isthmus in the south of the Eoligarry peninsula, not far from Barra airport . It was built in 1935 for Compton Mackenzie . Later, Suidheachan's rooms were used to process mussels. Stewart Tod had the building restored in 1999 and has been using it as living space again since then.

description

Suidheachan has a roughly asymmetrical H-shaped floor plan. The single-story building is made of brick , plastered with white Harl . It ends with a slate-covered hip or gable roof . The chimneys are made with cornices . The longest part of the building extends to the west and is flanked on both sides by orthogonally extending wings that protrude a short distance to the west and thus form the H-shaped floor plan. At the end of the south-east wing there is a short part of the building with large roof windows that runs parallel to the main wing. Twin windows are installed on all parts of the building. The land-side orientation of the central rooms, which offers a view of typical landscapes without any special features, appears unusual. To the east, on the other hand, there would be a panorama over the islands of Gighay and Hellisay and in the distance Rum and Canna .
