A sum ( Mongolian ᠰᠤᠮᠤ, Cyrillic: Сум) is a second-level administrative unit in Mongolia . The aimags of Mongolia are divided into 331 Sums.

On average the area of a sum is about 4200 km 2 , with a population of about 5000 inhabitants, most of them nomadic ranchers .

Each sum is again divided into several bags . Most bags are purely administrative units without a permanent settlement.

Often the administrative center of a sum has an official name and on some maps a different name, but in everyday language the settlement is almost always equated with the sum, to the point of largely ignorance of the official name, even among locals. (Example: Tariat )
