Sumitomo Shōji KK ( Japanese 住友 商 事 株式会社 , Sumitomo Shōji Kabushiki kaisha ; English Sumitomo Corporation ) is a Japanese conglomerate. As one of the great traditional trading houses ( Sōgō Shōsha ), it is one of the 30 largest companies in Japan and is the core of the Sumitomo Group .

The company was founded in 1919 as Ōsaka Hokkō KK ( 大阪 北港 株式会社 ) and was originally active in the areas of real estate, land reclamation and development in the port of Osaka . 1944 was created by the merger with Sumitomo Building KK , the Sumitomo Tochi Komu KK ( 住友土地工務 ), a year later, the Nihon kensetsu Sangyo KK ( 日本建設産業 ). After the Second World War, the transition to a trading company began; many of the products traded are produced by subsidiaries or independent companies of the Sumitomo Group.

Today Sumitomo Shōji has 148 branches in 65 countries and 898 subsidiaries worldwide. Around 38% of the income in the 2006/07 financial year (April 1 to March 31) was achieved domestically, a further 21% in the rest of Asia and a quarter in America . The largest contributions to the group result were made by the metal ( kinzoku ) and transportation and construction machinery ( yusōki / kenki ) divisions, each with 14% .
