The Sumiyoshi school ( Japanese 住 吉 派 , Sumiyoshi-ha ) of Japanese painting , named after the Sumiyoshi family of artists, split off from the Tosa school, which was also in the Yamato-e tradition , at the beginning of the Edo period .
overview
Sumiyoshi Hiromichi learned to paint under Tosa Mitsuyoshi and Mitsunori and took the stage name Yokei ( 如 慶 ). In 1662 he went into business for himself and founded the Sumiyoshi School. His son Hirozumi called himself Gukei ( 具 慶 ), became an accredited painter of the Shogunate, Goyō-eshi ( 御用 絵 師 ) and moved to Edo . He and his descendants were active in painting until the 19th century. - After Hiromori two branches of the school arose, one founded by Itaya Keishū and the other by Awatsuguchi Keiu.
The Sumiyoshi School left behind a variety of pictures, scrolls, and screens, tending to be a little more realistic than the Tosa School.
