Sumiyoshi Jokei
Sumiyoshi Jokei ( Japanese 住 吉 如 慶 , real name: Sumiyoshi Hiromichi ( 住 吉 広 道 ); born 1599 in the province of Izumi ; died July 18, 1670 ) was a Japanese painter and founder of the Sumiyoshi school at the beginning of the Edo period .
life and work
Sumiyoshi Jokei could have been the second son of Tosa Mitsuyoshi and thus the younger brother of Tosa Mitsunori. Maybe he was simply a student of Mitsuyoshi. At first he was connected to the Tosa School in Kyoto, but then moved to Edo and founded his own school there. At the direction of Emperor Go-Sai , he changed his name when he was appointed the official painter of the Sumiyoshi Shrine in Sumiyoshi . He was also an official painter ( 御用 絵 師 , Goyō-eshi ) of the Shogunate and received the honorary title Hokkyō and the higher title Hōgen. - At the end of his life he became a monk.
Jokei tried - like the Tosa school - to revive the Yamato-e , Japan's own old painting style. Both schools then existed side by side until the end of the Edo period. - One of the traditional works is the copy of the Nenjū gyōji emaki ( 年 中 行事 絵 巻 ), a scroll with descriptions of the annual religious festivals, which proves that he was engaged in research into classical painting. The other decorative picture scrolls show no further development compared to the standard set by the Tosa School. These include the "chrysanthemum sketches" ( 菊花 写生 図 巻 , Kikuka shasei emaki ), a picture scroll for the Ise Monogatari , a picture scroll for the Genji Monogatari , the "story of Tōshōgū" ( 東 照 宮 縁 起 絵 巻 , Tōshōgū engi emaki des., A transfiguration) Life of Tokugawa Ieyasu in the possession of the Nikkō Shrine. He created the latter work together with his son Gūkei ( 住 吉 具 慶 ).

Remarks
- ↑ Hokkyō ( 法 橋 ) and Hōgen ( 法眼 ) were honorary titles, originally for higher priests, but later also for scholars and artists.
