Systematics

The Tahan croissant was not considered a separate species until 2010 and was accordingly not included in Wilson & Reeder 2005, edited by Richard W. Thorington Jr. In the Squirrels of the World from 2012, also edited by Thorington, however, the species was considered and listed as an independent species by Robert den Tex and others from 2010 due to a molecular biological work on the phylogeny of the genus.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

Information on the status and endangerment of the Tahan squirrel does not exist, the species has not yet been included in the IUCN database .
