Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a 139 hectare national park in northwestern Singapore . The area at the mouth of three rivers was originally used for breeding fish and crabs . The ecological importance of this last larger contiguous area of mangrove forests in Singapore was recognized in 1989. The breeding farms were relocated and the area developed into a nature park . This was officially opened in 1993 by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong . On January 1, 2002, the area was upgraded to a nature reserve and renamed Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve .

The park extends over the estuary of three rivers and is home to mangrove forests, lakes, small ponds and regenerated rainforest ( secondary forest ). From September to April the area is visited by migratory birds , which rest here before their onward flight to the south. Since the park is the last resting area on the Malay Peninsula, it is of great importance for migratory birds. A total of 126 bird species were registered. In addition, the park offers a habitat for around 200 sea monitors , which can grow up to 2 m. Snakes ( grass snakes ), crustaceans , mudskippers , turtles and many species of fish can also be found in the water .

Infrastructure

The park is easily accessible with three circular routes (3 km, 5 km, 7 km). Some of the paths lead directly through the mangrove forests on wooden walkways and thus allow a direct experience of this biotope . A large number of observation stands allow birds to be observed undisturbed. Some of them are equipped with cell phones for emergencies . Two observation towers offer a good overview of the park. The visitor center at the entrance of the park houses an exhibition about flora and fauna of the area as well as a small café. An “outdoor classroom” is available for groups (e.g. school classes).
