Sunnmøre Museum

The Sunnmøre Museum is a folklore-outdoor museum in the Norwegian city of Alesund (fylke Møre og Romsdal ) that deals with the coastal culture of the region Sunnmøre concerned. The museum was founded in 1931 and is located on an area of ​​120 hectares in Borgundgavlen, about 4 km from Ålesund city center.

The open-air museum consists of a collection of 50 residential and farm buildings, alpine huts, barns, boat houses and fishermen's cottages from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.

Typical boats from the region are exhibited in a boat hall and at the museum quay. Including a faithful replica of the Kvalsund boat , the Borgund ratchet and the Fjørtoft boats from the 7th and 8th centuries. The museum boat “Heland”, a fishing cutter from 1937, which was used as a boat for the Shetland Bus during the Second World War as an escape vehicle, is moored on the quay .

Archaeological Department

The archaeological department of the museum includes the partly excavated medieval trading center Borgundkaupangen and the Museum of Antiquities and Medieval Times , in which objects from the cultural history of the region from the earlier Stone Age to the 14th century are exhibited.
