Super 3 is a board game by the American game designer Alan M. Newman , which was published by MB Spiele in 1978 . The game is based on the classic tic-tac-toe , in which a player has to get three fields in a row to win the game; Here, however, the player must win a field with three pegs in a row in order to then win the game with three fields next to each other.

Theme and equipment

Super 3 is a game based on the classic tic-tac-toe . Players can by playing dice each occupy with their guide pins in each hole to win individual box, only to win the game with three boxes in a row or five boxes total.

In addition to instructions in the box lid, the game material consists of a plastic game board with 9 fields, each with 9 holes, a red and a yellow set of 64 pins each and two six-sided game dice.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, each player is given a set of plastic pins, the game board and the dice are placed in the middle of the playing field. The starting player is rolled and starts the game, then the players take turns rolling.

A field can be won by using three pins in a row
The first player to win three fields in a row or five fields in total wins the game.

The active player in each case rolls both dice and adds the number of eyes of the roll. He may then stick one of his pens in any hole on the playing field with the number rolled or in any hole in the field corresponding to the number with the exception of the middle field. There are also three special throws with slightly different rules:

  • If the player rolls a 12 (two 6s), he may choose a hole on the entire playing field, including the middle fields,
  • if he rolls a 7, he may choose any center hole or a hole in the 7 field, and
  • if he rolls a 2 (two 1s), he may remove any opponent's pen from a field with the exception of the fields that have already been won. Then he may roll the dice again and place his own pen.

If no pen can be placed after a throw, if all the corresponding holes are already filled at this point in time, the player may throw the dice again and, if necessary, a third time. If he cannot place a pen even then, it is the opponent's turn.

By placing the pins, the players try to win fields by placing three pins in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row or with 5 pins in the entire field. If they succeed, the field is considered won and the player removes all opposing pegs from it; the field is excluded in the further moves.

The first player to win three fields in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row or a total of five fields wins the game.

Versions and reception

The game Super 3 was developed by the American game designer Alan M. Newman and was published in 1978 by the Milton Bradley Company in English and at the same time by their German offshoot MB Spiele on the German, MB Jeux on the French and MB Spellen on the Dutch market. In 1988 the game appeared under the name Mental Blox at Canada Games and in 1992 Pressman released Toy Corp. the same game as Super Tic-Tac-Toe .

At spielphase.de the game was rated 3 out of 10 points. The reviewers wrote:

“This game is essentially like a tic-tac-toe with a random mechanism in the form of dice. Nevertheless, a little planning is necessary when setting the game pins so that the opponent is hindered in conquering. A quite useful game for in between, but far from a hit. The rules are easy to understand, but the game is really not a tactical challenge. "

Arno Steinwender rated the game at spieletest.at as “a simple dice game in which you can use a little tactics. If you are looking for a "dice-cracker" game and have fun throwing the dice, you will be well served with Super 3. "According to the website superfred.de, Super 3 is " a simple tic tac toe clone that is played with dice. " “This game can still be enjoyed by dice fetishists today, even if it is really not a highlight. But it offers enough entertainment for a quick game of gamblers in between. "
