He describes in great detail the construction at the Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Newport News , Virginia . The reader learns how it is set up from the “tour” that Clancy takes with him on the USS George Washington (CVN-73) . The third chapter of the heart of the book describes the planes and weapons currently in use on American aircraft carriers. These include the F-14 , the F / A-18 , the Sidewinder , the Sparrow and the Phoenix .

Clancy then describes the establishment of Carrier Vessel Battle Groups (CVBG) and an exercise by an aircraft carrier association. The book is concluded with a fictional scenario in 2016 off the coast of Sri Lanka .
