Surpoche Shakya Chungne

Surpoche Shakya Chungne ( Tibetan ཟུར་ པོ་ ཆེ་ ཤཱ ཀྱ་ འབྱུང་ གནས་ Wylie zur po che shAkya 'byung gnas ; born 1002 ; died 1062 ) was an eminent Tibetan clergyman and founder of one of the lines of practice of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism .

Life

He is known as the "Big Sur" of the Three Surs of the Sur family ( zur ). In 1055 he founded the Upalung monastery or Sur Ugpalung monastery ( zur 'ug pa lung dgon pa ) named after the place Upalung ( Tib. ' Ug pa lung ) and is therefore also known as Upalungpa.
