The Upalung Monastery ( Tib. 'Ug pa lung ) or the Sur-Upalung Monastery ( zur' ug pa lung dgon pa ) is a Nyingma monastery founded in the 11th century near Samzhubzê in the Tanag ( rta nag ) valley in the Tsang region of Tibet. It was founded in 1055 by Surpoche Shakya Chungne (Tib. Zur po che shAkya 'byung gnas ; 1002-1062), who is also known as Upalungpa. He was an eminent Tibetan clergyman and the founder of one of the lines of practice of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism . He is known as the "Big Sur" the Three Sur's the Sur family ( the known):

“He founded the Upalung Monastery, opening a center for the unification of the religious activities of the Nyingma sect. With his religious activities in this monastery he drove the development and perfection of the rituals of the Nyingma sect and ended their scatteredness and unstructuredness.
