Surp-Marinos Monastery ( Armenian Սուրբ Մարինոս վանք ), also Srkhouvank, Srxuvank ' was an Armenian monastery in the district Gürpınar of Van province southeast of Lake Van in the region Eastern Anatolia .

The monastery is located on a mountain slope on Lake Van and overlooks the expanses and fertile lowlands of the valley of Hoşap , today known as the plain of Gürpınar, which in turn was formerly known as Hayodz Dzor ( Armenian Հայոց Ձոր ) - meaning: Valley of the Armenians .

history

The founding date of the monastery is unknown and the simplicity of its construction makes dating difficult. It was originally named Srkhouvank . It was founded for a community of nuns and dedicated to Saints Marina and Theodora . It had a rich scriptorium during the second half of the sixteenth century; Five manuscripts from the monastery of St. Marina are kept in the Matenadaran archive in Yerevan . The remains of the building, which have been badly damaged today, probably date from the 17th century. The monastery existed until the Armenian genocide in 1915 and was damaged in 1922.
