In the geosciences, a survey is the name given to measurements for land registers . The meaning comes u. a. Terminus Surveying expressed that as the German state survey or some tasks of engineering geodesy sector.

The Surveyor but covers not only land and its borders , but previously required a survey network of well marketed fixed points ( fixed points ). If these are difficult to access, he creates local measuring points ( survey points ).

The fact that the seven US lunar probes of the 1960s were also called surveyors has, in addition to testing new orbital and landing techniques , to do with the precise exploration of the lunar soil . This served to prepare for the manned Apollo 11 landing, so that Surveyors 1 to 7 also had to perform tasks in the sense of points 1 and 3 above (feared deep moondust ).
