Rottenbacher studied stage design at Columbia University from 1988 to 1991 and completed a degree in light (M.Sc.) from 1991 to 1992 at the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning. She currently lives in Berlin.

Susanne Rottenbacher creates expansive installations from sculptural elements, which, in combination with light, is also described as "walk-in light painting". These are structures made of plexiglass, which are equipped with differently colored LED light sources. They are designed with dynamic stripe patterns on the outside. These are partly painted by hand or they are printed on. A color-changing foil is also used in a number of works. Rottenbacher's sculptures are often placed differently in the room, sometimes standing, lying or hanging on wire ropes.
