The Suva City Carnegie Library was built between 1908-09 with financial support from Andrew Carnegie in Suva , capital of Fiji built. Of 2,509 Carnegie libraries worldwide , it is the only one in Fiji.

The then governor of Fiji, Sir Everard Im Thurn , laid the foundation stone on September 1, 1908 at Victoria Parade, the main street of the metropolis. The donation from the US industrialist in the amount of 1,500 pounds ($ 7,300, today's value rounded $ 185,400) covered the majority of the construction costs of the building, which now forms the central section of the building, which was later expanded by two side wings. The library was opened on November 20, 1909.

In 1922 the library received an extension that housed the children's library. The two side wings that still exist today were added in 1930, while the extension for the children's library was demolished in 1996 to make way for the Civic Tower, the current town hall of the city. The children's library has since been housed in the main library.

In 1953, Suva City Council changed the name of the Carnegie Library to Suva City Library . In January 2008 it was finally given the name Suva City Carnegie Library, which is still used today .
