Suzanne Williams

Suzanne Williams (born June 25, 1956 ) is a former Australian judoka who won three silver medals at world championships.

Athletic career

Suzanne Williams won fifteen Australian championship titles in lightweight between 1975 and 1990, as well as four titles in the open class. She was Oceania Champion in 1977 and 1979 and also won bronze in the open class in 1979. At the Judo World Championships in 1982 Williams reached the final and lost there against the French Béatrice Rodriguez . Two years later she reached the final again at the 1984 World Championships in Vienna , this time losing to Ann Maria Burns from the United States. After she was eliminated early at the 1986 World Championships , Williams reached the final again at the 1987 World Championships in Essen . After her loss to French Catherine Arnaud , she received her third silver medal at world championships.

At the 1988 Summer Olympics , women's judo competitions were offered as a demonstration sport. At the Olympic tournament , Williams won the semifinals against Arnaud. In the final, she beat the Chinese Liu Guizhu by a judge's decision. In 1990 Williams reached the final at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, where she lost to Loretta Doyle from Scotland .
