Suzuki Sujaku

Suzuki Sujaku ( Japanese 鈴木 朱雀 , actually Suzuki Kōtarō ( 鈴木 幸 太郎 ); born December 7, 1891 in Tokyo ; died May 4, 1972 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Meiji , Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Suzuki studied painting in the Nihonga style with Noda Kyūho ( 野 田 九 浦 ; 1879–1971). After Suzuki's work "Zwitschernder Vogel" ( 吟 鳥 Ginchō ) was accepted for the 2nd  Teiten exhibition , he then regularly submitted new works. On the 9th part of 1928 he showed a picture of “ Serpentine Fornication” ( 蛇 性 の 婬Jasei no in ), a story from the Ugetsu Monogatari , at the 13th exhibition in 1932 “Gracias last hour” ( が ら し や 殿 最後 Garasha -dono saigo ) and a picture of Koizumi Yakumo at the 15th exhibition .

In 1936 he took part in the art competition on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Berlin with the work "Classic Japanese Horse Race" ( 古典 的 競 馬 Kotenteki keiba ), with which he won a bronze medal. Along with Fujita Ryūji, he was one of the two Japanese who won an art competition in 1936. Other than that, Suzuki mainly dealt with historical topics.

Suzuki was a member of the "Nihon Bijutsu Kyōkai" ( 日本 美術 協会 ) and also submitted work to the Kōdosha ( 煌 土 社 ).
