Sven Marx (born May 12, 1967 in East Berlin ) is a German cyclist and adventurer. After a serious tumor operation, he discovered cycling as a form of travel for himself and, according to his own statements, had covered a total of 81,000 km through 43 countries on all continents by the end of 2018. With the income from his lectures, Marx supports various social associations.

Life

Marx did a roofing apprenticeship from 1983 to 1985 and was co-owner of a roofing company from 1990 to 2003 . From 2003 to 2009 he was a diving instructor trainer and manager at various diving centers. In 2009 he received a partial removal of a tumor on his brain stem and was paralyzed on one side for three months, with artificial nutrition and ventilation, in an intensive care unit. After a further three months of rehab , he was declared a nursing case, but fought his way back into an independent life. He has been married since 2009. From 2009 to April 2017 he went on various bike tours in preparation for his world tour. In 2011, a malignant melanoma was removed in another operation. In 2015 he had a special audience with Pope Francis to bless the so-called inclusion torch.

From April 23, 2017 to September 8, 2018, Marx went around the world by bike. He covered around 32,000 km and was received in 16 German embassies to talk about inclusion in the respective host country. In his luggage he had the inclusion torch of the Inklusion Deutschland network, which was a visible symbol at every photo session when visiting the embassy. His courage and tireless commitment to inclusion received wide media coverage and prominent support, for example from Verena Bentele and Michael Müller, the Governing Mayor of Berlin. On May 4, 2018, Canadian Environment Minister Catherine McKenna gave a speech at his reception in Ottawa. Russian television met Marx in Vladivostok and reported on his trip and the press conference there with the German consul and disabled athletes. N24 reported on him from Washington DC.

Since November 2018, Sven Marx has hosted the program "Two cyclists - one opinion?" On the internet radio station rockradio.de. In it he speaks to guests from the cycling scene.

Ideas

Sven Marx states that his work shows how important the topic of inclusion is and would like to encourage other people who have also experienced similar things and serve as role models. "Sven's mission is to use his trip to raise awareness for and start a conversation about reducing barriers for those with disabilities. Under the motto 'Inclusion Requires Action' he hopes his cycling the world will showcase that disabilities should not hold anyone back from reaching for their dreams and that anything is possible if we ensure access for everyone. "" If everyone has something for the cooperation of the disabled and non-disabled people does, it will be easier for everyone affected to find a new life. "

Sven Marx's handicap (October 2018) is caused by a 1 cm³ tumor on the brain stem. Only half of this could be surgically removed. The impairments as a result are double vision - seeing in 100% of his field of vision , loss of spatial vision, balance - and swallowing reflex disorders . For him, cycling is easier than running because a bike stabilizes itself once it is driven.
