The Svensk Förening för Sömnforskning och Sömnmedicin (abbreviated SFSS, Swedish Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine ) is a scientific specialist society that has set itself the goal of researching sleep and its disorders.

The purpose of the association is to promote basic research, applied research and clinical activities in connection with sleep and wakefulness and to carry out public relations work.

activities

On the topics of sleep research and sleep medicine, the SFSS organizes meetings and symposia, conducts training courses and workshops, and issues publications. Within the scope of its possibilities, the association awards grants annually for the promotion of Swedish sleep research.

The SFSS deals with the accreditation of sleep physicians and sleep laboratories using the recommendations of the SFSS through its participation in the "Nordic Sleep Medicine Accreditation Committee" (NOSMAC), in which the relevant specialist societies from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland and Norway are also represented European Sleep Research Society (ERSR). Eleven centers offer the full spectrum of sleep medical examinations, 25 others focus on sleep-related breathing disorders and 15 also deal with sleep research (as of December 2011).

history

The association was founded in 1989 as "Svensk förening för sömnforskning" (SFSF) with a focus on sleep research. Jerker Hetta was the founding president. The statutes adopted at the constituent meeting on February 6, 1989 were revised in 2006 and adapted to the expanded objectives. Since then, the association has had the changed name.

organization

The SFSS is an ideal association. Members from sleep research can apply for membership. Institutions and companies can be accepted into the association as supporting members. These members are not entitled to vote.

There are working groups in the association focusing on dental sleep medicine, pediatric sleep medicine and behavioral therapy for insomnia.

The chair is Lena Leissner from Örebro University Hospital . The association has more than 500 members (as of May 2012).
