Swami Satchidananda at the Woodstock Festival (1969)

Swami Satchidananda then headed one of Sivananda's ashrams in the hill country of Sri Lanka for several years. There he taught yoga and made some modernizations in the lifestyle of the ashram residents.

In 1966 he came to the USA at the invitation of the artist Peter Max. Soon after, he moved there and became an American citizen. In 1969 he appeared as the keynote speaker at the Woodstock Festival . He founded the Integral Yoga Institute in New York and a spiritual center in Yogaville, Virginia.

The integral yoga

The term “ integral yoga ” was first used by Sri Aurobindo with a specific meaning in works such as The Synthesis of Yoga , which originated at the time of the First World War. Although it is reported that there was a brief encounter between Sri Aurobindo and Satchidananda, the latter stated that his integral yoga was his own creation. For him, it was about flexibly merging different traditional yoga paths in a new system in order to be able to develop all aspects of the human personality - body, mind and soul - comprehensively and harmoniously.
