Swaraj Prakash Gupta

Swaraj Prakash Gupta (SP Gupta; 1931 - 2007 ) was an Indian archaeologist and art historian. He was director of the Allahabad Museum.

Gupta was born in 1931. He was never married.

Gupta was a scholar, writer, and an authority on Indian art history. He wrote articles and books on the subject. Gupta also did some archaeological digs at Harappa sites. At the time of his death he was the chairman of the Indian Archaeological Society, New Delhi, and he established the Indian History and Culture Society as a full-fledged research center.

Gupta has worked and lectured in more than 30 countries. He was director of the Allahabad Museum.

He was also the editor of several volumes of Puratattva, the bulletin of the Indian Archaeological Society.

He was a distinguished archaeologist and art historian who received multiple gold medals and was awarded the Sir Mortimer Wheeler Prize for Excellence in Archeology. He also received the first Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar National Award in recognition of his dedication and contribution to archaeological research.

The Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Studies published a commemorative publication in his honor.
