Swing over

A swing over or visual approach with runway change in the final approach is a special flight maneuver in aviation in which the pilot on the final approach, after consultation with the tower or after approval by the tower, approaches a runway other than the originally planned runway .

With these maneuvers, airlines can save fuel costs over a longer period due to the shorter taxiways on the ground after landing at the parking position.

A short-term runway change at airports with parallel runways also occurs in aviation if the intended runway can no longer clear the runway due to technical problems such as burst tires or engine damage and the runway has to be closed immediately. The responsible controller then gives the swing-over instruction to the crew of the aircraft that is usually located at a short distance on the final approach. A swing-over is required much more frequently if - without technical problems - the previously landed aircraft does not roll off the runway in time or an aircraft that has been released for take-off takes off too much delayed.
