history

Josef Rettenmeier senior founded the company in Wört in 1948 as a timber business. From 1948 to 1978 he and two partners ran a sawmill for the production of construction and sawn timber in Wört. In 1969 he built a wood processing site and a small wood sawmill in Wilburgstetten, from which he and his two sons developed one of the largest companies in the European timber industry. In 1974 his son Josef Rettenmeier junior joined the company. A little later a planing mill for the production of profiled timber was built in Wilburgstetten. In 1990 a plant was taken over in nearby Tannhausen , and construction of a new plant began in Hirschberg, Thuringia . In the mid-1990s, wood processing companies in Slovakia and Latvia were taken over, then modernized and expanded.

In 2008, Rettenmeier Holzindustrie Ramstein GmbH & Co. KG was founded in Rhineland-Palatinate and went into operation in July 2009. After financial problems in connection with the plant in Ramstein, Cordes GmbH from Bremerhaven took over the Rettenmeier Group in January 2015.
