Spin Art , also known as Swirl Art , is an abstract painting technique that is particularly popular with children. The creative toys appeared under different names such as Swirl 'N' Paint , Swirl Art , spin-art-device or simply painting device .

The toy consists of a turntable on which a mostly postcard-sized, white cardboard is attached. Outside there is a round or rectangular higher border. The turntable is set in rotation by a motor . Paint, usually oil paint in plastic bottles, is dripped onto the cardboard from above. Because of the centrifugal force , the paint is thrown outwards on the cardboard. The combination of different colors creates abstract patterns (see web links).

The toy was known in the early 1980s, but there are newer, mostly smaller editions.

invention

The device was originally invented in America ( New Jersey ) in 1962 by the Twirlapaint company. It is still popular there today and is used at folk festivals, usually as a large double version made of wood. Larger devices can also be rented.

Pedagogical point of view

The toy can be used alone or in pairs. It helps with coordination disorders of the eyes and hands and with difficulties with fine motor skills , such as B. can occur in children with Down syndrome .

Artist

A professional artist using this style is Steven Igoh. The US rock band Venice also used this art for the album cover of Spin Art (1999).

Related art styles are action painting , drip painting and the pour painting . Since objects can also be painted, especially Frisbee discs are popular, this technique is also part of the arts and crafts .
