Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology

The Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology ( SAoO ) is a central Swiss training facility for ophthalmologists and related professions based in Berneck . It was founded on August 16, 2016.

The aim is a practice-relevant and interactive transfer of knowledge, the quality assurance of ophthalmological care and the strengthening of scientific research in Switzerland. It is supported by a foundation, the Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology Foundation. The president of the foundation is the ophthalmologist Dietmar Thumm, the president of the program commission is the St. Gallen ophthalmologist Daniel Mojon . The academy wants to meet annually; the first congress took place from March 8 to 10, 2017 in Lucerne . The focus was on new therapies for retinal diseases , glaucoma and cataracts as well as current developments in the operation of ametropia ( refractive surgery ).

Every year an innovation prize is awarded at the SAoO congress. In 2018 it went to the Belgian ophthalmologist Marc Gobin, who had developed an initial concept for the minimally invasive strabismus surgery (MISS) developed by Daniel Mojon . In 2019, the American pediatric ophthalmologists Ken Nishal and David Granet were honored with the innovation award.

There is also a development association, also based in Berneck.
