Daniel Stéphane Mojon (born July 29, 1963 in Bern ) is a Swiss ophthalmologist . He is considered the founder of minimally invasive strabismus surgery (MISS) , an eye muscle operation with a small incision, which leads to faster wound healing and rehabilitation. Daniel Mojon is co-founder of the Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology , which met for the first time in Lucerne in March 2017, and holds the position of President of the Program Committee.

Life and education

Mojon, son of the art historian Luc Mojon , studied medicine at the University of Bern and in the USA at Columbia University in New York. He held leading positions at the University Eye Clinic in Bern and at the Clinic for Ophthalmology in the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital. At the University Hospital Bern (Inselspital) he was the head physician in the Department of Strabology and Neuroophthalmology . At the Ophthalmology Clinic at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital, he headed the laboratories for experimental oculography. His habilitation took place in 2000 at the University Eye Clinic in Bern. Since then he has been teaching at the University of Bern, from 2007 as an honorary professor . In 2012, he resigned from his position at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital and went into private research and practice. Mojon is married to the health economist Stefania Mojon-Azzi.

Scientific work

The psychosocial aspects of strabology represent a scientific focus . In several studies Mojon demonstrated how much patients with strabismus are disadvantaged and stigmatized in daily life.

In addition, Mojon developed a minimally invasive form of surgery for strabismus ( MISS ), in which, in contrast to the conventional door leaf technique according to Harms or Fornix technique according to Parks, the conjunctiva is only made with very small incisions of only two to a maximum of three millimeters is opened. Ten years after its inception, the safety of this method and the faster rehabilitation after such an operation is widely recognized; however, it is more difficult for the surgeon to learn and perform than conventional strabismus surgery with incisions of usually over 1 centimeter.

Another research focus of mojons is glaucoma (green star). With his research group he demonstrated, among other things, the close association between sleep apnea syndrome and this common eye disease. In 2016 Daniel Mojon founded the Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology with several Swiss ophthalmologist colleagues (including Dr. Dietmar Thumm, Dr. Albert Franceschetti, PD Carl Herbort) . The aim of the foundation is to actively promote quality assurance, research and training in practical ophthalmology. In September 2018, Mojon was the first Swiss ophthalmologist to give a keynote lecture at a conference of the DOG ( German Ophthalmological Society ) on minimally invasive eye surgery . Daniel Mojon was honored by the University of Toronto with an honorary lecture on Jack Crawford Day in April 2019 for his contributions to innovations in surgical ophthalmology and especially for the invention of MISS.
