The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey mapped it on the basis of surveys and aerial photographs from the years 1946 to 1959. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1964 after the British glaciologist Charles Winthrop Molesworth Swithinbank (1926-2014), who worked on several British, New Zealand and US expeditions to Antarctica between 1949 and 1962.
