Sylvain-Charles Valée

Sylvain-Charles, comte Valée (born December 17, 1773 in Brienne-le-Château , † August 16, 1846 in Paris ) was a French general, marshal and peer of France .

Life

Valée joined the Northern Army in 1792, was promoted to captain in 1795 and to lieutenant colonel in 1804 and, after having distinguished himself at Jena, received command of the 1st artillery regiment as a colonel in January 1807.

In 1809 Napoleon I gave him command of the artillery of the 3rd Army Corps in Spain, where Valée was promoted to division general in August 1811.

In the first restoration, he returned to France and was by Louis XVIII. elevated to general inspector of artillery . Although he had assumed command of the artillery of the 5th Army Corps during the Hundred Days of Napoleon, Louis XVIII appointed him. again as Inspector General of the Central Committee for Artillery.

After Valée had received the title of peer in 1835, he accompanied General Damrémont to Algeria in 1837 , took command of the artillery during his expedition against Constantine, took command of the artillery after Damrémont's death and took the city by storm on October 13th. As a reward he received the marshal's baton and at the beginning of December the appointment as governor general of the French possessions in Africa. After expanding the French conquests considerably, he was recalled in late 1840.

He died in Paris on August 16, 1846 .

His name is entered on the triumphal arch in Paris in the 36th column.
