Sylvain Grébaut

Sylvain Grébaut (born December 22, 1881 in Gournay-en-Bray , † November 26, 1955 in Caen ) was a French clergyman and Ethiopist .

Grébaut received his training in the boys' and seminary in Rouen. The encounter with Maronite colleagues aroused his interest in the Semitic languages, Syrian, Arabic, Hebrew, Assyrian and Ethiopian. In 1904/05 he studied Semitic Studies in Jerusalem with Marie-Joseph Lagrange . In 1907 he was ordained a Catholic priest in Rouen , and then and in the following years he worked for the "Revue de l'Orient Chrétien" and the " Patrologia Orientalis ".

From 1913 to 1932 Grébaut worked as a Roman Catholic pastor in Neuf-Marché . From 1926 to 1952 he taught Ethiopian at the Institut Catholique de Paris , from 1941 also at the École Pratique des Hautes Études .

In 1922 he founded the first Ethiopian journal ("Æthiops"), which, with interruptions and under changing names, was able to appear with him as editor and main author until 1938.

In 1926 Pope Pius XI sent him . to Ethiopia with the aim and richly fulfilled result of acquiring manuscripts for the Vatican Apostolic Library there. Together with the orientalist and later Cardinal Eugène Tisserant , he created the voluminous catalog of all ethiopica of the Vaticana.
