The Sylvan Lake is one of five lakes in Custer State Park in the Black Hills in the State of South Dakota . The lake was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder , the builder and owner of Sylvan Lake Lodge, dammed the Sunday Gulch Creek with a wall. The approximately 10 meter high Sylvan Lake Water Dam is located at the narrowest point of the surrounding mountains on the northwestern side of the lake.

The lake and its surroundings offer opportunities for climbing, swimming, hiking on various hiking trails, some of which are paved, and a boat rental. A campsite is in the immediate vicinity. The Sylvan Lake Lodge, built in the early 20th century, is also located on the lake. Sylvan Lake is a very popular location for weddings and other special occasions.
Access
The lake can be reached via the Needles Highway . There are chargeable parking spaces near the lake. There are well-developed hiking trails.
Movie
Scenes from the 2007 Disney film The Legacy of the Secret Book were filmed on Sylvan Lake. In the movie, the lake appeared to be directly behind Mount Rushmore , but in reality it is about 5 miles southwest of it.
